Open File Security Warning

Open File Security Warning When Running a File Copied From Another PC

The Problem

You may see an Open File Security Warning when running a file copied from another PC. Even if you untick the Always Ask checkbox, you may still see the error.

Open File Security Warning on Vista

Background

Windows Vista (and also Windows XP SP2) block files copied from other PCs to protect your PC. You have the option to unblock the file, but if you have already copied the file to your Programs folder, the Unblock has no effect.

The Solution

When copying an executable file (.exe) from another PC, first copy it to your desktop. Then right-click on it and select Properties. On the General tab click Unblock and click OK. Then copy the file to your Programs folder in the normal way.

Unblock File on Vista

By unblocking the file before copying it to the Programs folder you are able to successfully prevent the security warning dialog appearing.
