Problems with installation

How do I specify which fields I want to monitor ?

First of all, you need to run the Amphis BizMonitor Config application and specify on page 1 which database you wish to monitor. Then, on page 2 you can specify which fields to monitor. This is done by entering a SQL statement for each field you wish to monitor.

You can monitor things like :-

The count of new entries in the last hour eg for "Number of new User registrations in the last hour".

The total value of entries created in the last hour eg for "Total sales in the last hour".

The total number of entries in a table eg for "Total number of users".

The BizMonitor application requires that you return the result in a "result" field. Here are some example SQL queries that you could use. Please note that the exact SQL you need depends on the schema of your database.

Total number of users
select count(*) as result from users
(the above example shows the total number of users in the database)

New registrations
select count(*) as result from users where datecreated > dateadd('h',-1,now())
(the above example shows the total number of users created in the last hour)

Total sales
select sum(total) as result from sales
(the above example shows the total value of all sales in the database)

Sales this hour
select sum(total) as result from sales where datecreated > dateadd('h',-1,now())
(the above example shows the total value of sales created in the last hour)

Current Status
select status as result from summary
(the above example shows the current value of the status field)

What URL do I need to browse to in order to see the data ?

By default the URL on Windows XP is

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Amphis BizMonitor\report.htm

and on Windows Vista it is

    C:\ProgramData\Amphis BizMonitor\report.htm

The easiest way to browse to the URL is to go to page 1 of the Amphis BizMonitorConfig app and click on the View button next to the Summary File details.

From the summary page you can also click on the 24 hour history link to see the historic values.

If you have Internet Information Services (IIS) installed you can change the folder to something like c:\inetpub\wwwroot and access the summary file through IIS eg at http://localhost/report.htm

With IIS you could also configure the pages to be available across the internet so you could access the data remotely.

Why aren't the html web pages being created ?

First of all, please check you are using v1.1 which is the latest version. If you run the Amphis BizMonitorConfig application and go to the Help->Help About menu it will show you the version you are using. If you are using v1.0, please go to Control Panel and uninstall it and then download the latest version from here and install it.

v1.1 is easier to setup and also starts the windows service automatically.

You need to run the Amphis BizMonitor Config application to specify which database you wish to monitor and what values you are going to monitor and to specify any alerts etc.

After you have completed page 2, the Amphis BizMonitor windows service will be started automatically. It is the BizMonitor windows service which creates the web pages and (optionally) sends summary and alert emails.

Then you can browse to the BizMonitor summary page. The easiest way to do this is to run the BizMonitor Config application and click on the View button on page 1.

Once you are happy that the BizMonitor windows service is configured correctly (ie you can see the summary page with the values being monitored) it is a good idea to set the windows service to start automatically when your PC starts up. You can do this by right-clicking on the windows service, selecting Properties and selecting the startup type as Automatic.

How do I start or restart the Amphis BizMonitor windows service ?

In v1.1, the windows service is started for you automatically from the Amphis BizMonitorConfig application but it is also a good idea to set the windows service to start automatically when you reboot your PC.

From the Start menu, click Control Panel and then double-click Administrative Tools. Then double-click Services and you will see a list of windows services like this. The status will show as Started if the service has already been started.

To start the Amphis BizMonitor service, select the Amphis BizMonitor row and then either click the Play button or you can right-click on it and select the Start menu option. If the service is already Started you can restart it by right-clicking on it and selecting Restart.

Why are values displayed as a question mark ?

If a value is displayed as a question mark, it means there was a problem retrieving the required value. This could be because there is a problem with the SQL command specified in the Amphis BizMonitor Configuration application.

To fix this, run the Configuration application again and check the alerts you have specified on Page 2.

In the example above there is a typo in the SELECT statement which would cause the database query to fail and this is why the value is displayed as ? on the html summary page. To fix it just requires changing selct to select, clicking OK and then restarting the windows service.

Also, the problem could be a permissions problem. By default the Amphis BizMonitor windows service runs as the Local System account. If you are trying to monitor a SQL Server database you may need to change the service to run as a different user that has access to your SQL Server database.
